Mitigation, in climate change terms, means what we do about preventing anthropogenic or manmade climate chaos. All international mitigation strategies include Negative Emissions Technologies, ways to remove CO2 and other greenhouse gases from the atmosphere using technology. But this is not a genuine mitigation solution – it’s a fantasy. It’s technologically possibly to suck CO2 from the atmosphere but not at scale or for a price anyone will pay. For more on this, we recommend a recent speech by Prof Kevin Anderson, a leading critic of the international “head in the sand” approach to climate change mitigation. Start at 20’30”.
