We started making our own kitchen and bathroom products as a way to cut down on waste, but it’s also a way to cut your shopping bill and, in the case of toothpaste, to be sure of what you’re putting in your mouth.

Making your own toothpaste is incredibly easy. All you need is bicarbonate of soda, white clay in powder form, a pinch of sea salt, a few drops of essential oil and a glass pot (eg such as you get with upmarket yoghurts).

Mix bicarbonate of soda (10%) and white clay powder (90%) with a pinch of sea salt (apparently good for your teeth), the essential oil (we like sage) and some water until it forms a paste, then transfer to a glass pot.

If you make more than one pot, then keep the other in the fridge until needed.
